Quick instructions for growing sprouts in a sprout jar

Growing your own sprouts for the first time can raise many questions. We fundamentally differentiate between growing in a sprout glass and growing in a cress sieve. With this article we would like to make it as easy as possible for you to get started.

Sprouts grow in the sprout jar

    1. Select germinating seeds and soak them

    Soak germinating seeds

To prepare the seeds for cultivation, it is important that you soak them beforehand. Use 1-2 tablespoons of seeds (approx. 10-20g) and let them soak in a glass. You can find a table of recommended soaking times here .

    2. Rinse germination seeds

    Set up the sprout jar

Then empty the sprout jar over the sink and place it at an angle so that the remaining water can drain away. Important: Leave a little space so that air can circulate.

Rinse the sprouts with water twice a day (morning and evening). To do this, fill the glass with fresh water and shake it a little. After rinsing, pour out the water and leave the sprout jar upside down. This allows the excess water to drain completely and air to circulate.

    Rinse sprouts daily

    3. Harvest sprouts

Repeat the two steps every day until harvest. The recommended germination time for sprouts varies depending on the seed; a table for the germination times can be found here

Note: These are guidelines as growth depends on many factors such as temperature, light and air circulation. Just try it out, practice makes perfect.

Tips and tricks for growing sprouts

    • When growing sprouts in a sprout jar, we recommend starting with few seeds. For smaller varieties such as brocolli and alfalfa , a maximum of 2 tablespoons is sufficient.
    • When growing sprouts in the cress sieve, make sure that the bottom of the sieve is not completely covered so that air can still circulate.
    • Direct sunlight should be avoided.
    • A good position is on the windowsill for fresh air.
    • The room temperature should be around 20'C, although sprouts are not quite as sensitive there.
