Especially in summer, growing sprouts successfully can be a challenge in particularly warm temperatures . With a few simple tips, however, cultivation is reliably successful:
Choosing the right sprouting seeds
The choice of seeds is crucial for successful sprouting in summer . Choose high-quality organic seeds that are suitable for warm temperatures and germinate quickly. Popular summer sprouting varieties include alfalfa , mung beans , radish , and our salad mix . Buckwheat , Keimliebe , or muesli mix are also good choices – keep the following tips in mind.
Use the correct germination equipment
Use sprouting jars or trays for growing sprouts in summer. The containers must be well-ventilated to ensure optimal drainage of excess water . Consistent moisture for the seeds is essential. We have achieved the best results with sprouting jars, especially in summer.
Control of temperature and light
Sprouts grow best at 20-25°C. Protect them from extreme heat. Do not place the jars in direct sunlight, but rather in indirect light. If condensation forms inside the jar, it is too warm – in hot weather, place them in the refrigerator's vegetable drawer during the day (from day 2 onwards, to avoid shocking the sprouts).
Regular rinsing and cleaning
Rinse sprouts daily in summer, and 3-4 timesto prevent mold and bacteria. Use clean water, allow them to drain, and clean the equipment regularly. Use less seed for better aeration.
Timing of sprout harvesting
Germination takes 3-7 days. Harvest at the optimal time for flavor and freshness. They mature faster in summer – harvest a little earlier if necessary. Rinse excess sprouts twice daily, drain, and refrigerate.
With these tips, you can successfully grow sprouts in summer even without a garden. Sprouts contain valuable nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
Good luck with your growing!
